Bank Charges |
|
Are
UK Banks Breaking The Law? |
|
Ever
had a bank charge? Maybe it was because a direct debit was
applied to your account at the wrong time of the month, a
cheque was “referred”, or failed to clear on time. We have
all heard stories of people receiving a £35 letter charge to
inform them that their account was less then £1 over drawn
and probably commented “That’s criminal”. |
|
Well
what if it was? If the banks were actually breaking the law
imposing these charges and they had to give them all back.
|
|
Last year
the major UK banks
declared a combined profit of £18 billion, of this it has been
declared that £4.8 BILLION was attributed to
bank charges. Guess what? |
|
There
is a growing consensus that these charges are not in fact
legal and actually constitute a punitive fee, which cynically
applied, vastly improves profitability of the banks.
|
|
So
if you have been charged illegally shouldn’t you be able to
claim the charges back?. Well yes, but be warned, the banks
aren’t happy about returning these charges (we can think of
4.8 billion reasons why!) and many will fight, using every
trick in the book to avoid paying or cause unnecessary delay and so far this year the banks have
returned around £8 million in charges. |
